Understanding Mood Disorders

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD):
    • Summary: Persistent and pervasive low mood, characterized by feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and a loss of interest or pleasure in activities.
    • Common Symptoms: Depressed mood, fatigue, changes in sleep patterns, diminished interest in activities.
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia):
    • Summary: Chronic low-grade depression lasting for at least two years, with symptoms not as severe as MDD but still impactful.
    • Common Symptoms: Poor appetite or overeating, insomnia or hypersomnia, low energy, low self-esteem.
  • Bipolar I Disorder:
    • Summary: Episodes of major depression alternating with manic episodes characterized by elevated mood, increased energy, and impulsivity.
    • Common Symptoms: Depressive episodes, manic episodes, changes in sleep patterns, impaired judgment.
  • Bipolar II Disorder:
    • Summary: Recurrent depressive episodes alternating with hypomanic episodes (less severe than full mania).

  • Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD): 
    • Summary: Severe and recurrent temper outbursts disproportionate to the situation, with persistent irritability between outbursts.
    • Common Symptoms: Frequent temper outbursts, irritability, trouble functioning in multiple settings.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD):
    • Summary: Severe mood changes occurring in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.
    • Common Symptoms: Mood swings, irritability, fatigue, changes in appetite and sleep.
  • Substance/Medication-Induced Depressive Disorder:
    • Summary: Depressive symptoms arising as a result of substance use or medication.
    • Common Symptoms: Depressed mood, changes in sleep and appetite, fatigue.
  • Major Depressive Disorder with Seasonal Pattern (Seasonal Affective Disorder):
    • Summary: Recurrent depressive episodes occurring at a specific time of the year, often in the winter months.
